BEST EXTERIOR PAINT FOR CHARLESTON WEATHER
Humidity, salt air, blazing UV and sideways summer rain — Charleston is one of the toughest paint climates in America. Here’s what actually holds up.
What survives the Lowcountry — and what peels by year three
Walk any Charleston street and you can spot the difference between a paint job done for this climate and one that wasn’t: chalky fading on the sunny side, mildew shadows under the eaves, peeling around every joint. The Lowcountry combination of UV, moisture and salt punishes shortcuts fast.
What to look for in the can
For siding and trim here, you want 100% acrylic exterior paint — it stays flexible as wood swells and shrinks through humid summers, and it resists the chalking that cheaper vinyl-acrylic blends suffer in our sun. Look for built-in mildewcides (non-negotiable in Charleston), strong UV-fade resistance for south- and west-facing walls, and a self-priming, high-build formula that bridges hairline cracks.
Products we reach for
On most Lowcountry exteriors we’re choosing between top-shelf lines like Sherwin-Williams Duration and Emerald or Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior — premium 100% acrylics with excellent adhesion and mildew resistance. They cost more per gallon, but on a repaint cycle that stretches years longer, they’re the cheapest paint you can buy.
The paint matters less than the prep
Here’s the honest truth: an average paint over great prep beats a great paint over no prep, every time. Charleston exteriors need a real wash (see why in our pressure washing guide), complete scraping and sanding, primer on bare wood, and fresh elastomeric caulk at every seam before the first coat goes on. That’s the difference between a 3-year and a 10-year exterior.
